Shopify Storefront MCP and Store MCP solve different problems.
Checked against official docs on .
The similar names can be confusing. Shopify’s Storefront MCP helps an AI assist shoppers. Store MCP is an independent service that gives an authorized merchant’s AI access to supported store operations.
One connection, clear platform boundaries
Help a customer shop
Shopify Storefront MCP gives shopping assistants access to a store’s catalog, cart and policies. Use it for product discovery and a customer-facing path toward checkout.
Help a merchant run the store
Store MCP focuses on seller work: inspecting orders, preparing listings and checking inventory. eBay, Square and WooCommerce are open; Shopify App Store approval and Etsy Commercial Access remain pending.
Choose by audience, not by acronym
MCP describes a connection standard. It does not mean two services expose the same data or permissions. A shopper assistant and a merchant assistant should have different access.
How it works
- Identify the audience: a shopper browsing a store or a merchant managing operations.
- For customer product discovery and cart tasks, review Shopify’s Storefront MCP documentation.
- For supported seller operations, connect an available sales channel to Store MCP. Check the current Shopify review status before installing.
- Authorize your merchant AI with the minimum store access it needs. Keep customer-facing assistants separate from merchant credentials.
Supported work and its limits
Storefront commerce
Shopify’s documented tools serve a store’s catalog, cart and policies. Shopify also documents a separate Customer Accounts MCP for customer-specific orders and returns; do not confuse that with broad merchant administration.
Merchant operations
Store MCP uses authorized seller integrations for Shopify, eBay, Square and WooCommerce. Shopify public installation still requires App Store approval; Etsy public onboarding requires Commercial Access.
Complementary, not interchangeable
Store MCP does not replace Shopify’s official Storefront MCP, provide a shopper checkout, or claim to be an official Shopify product. A business may have a reason to use both for different audiences.

Does Store MCP replace Shopify Storefront MCP?
No. The services have different purposes. Store MCP does not implement the shopper cart and checkout experience described by Shopify’s Storefront MCP.
Is Store MCP made or approved by Shopify?
Store MCP is independent. No Shopify App Store approval or endorsement is claimed on this page.
Can Shopify’s MCP tools help customers with orders?
Shopify documents a separate Customer Accounts MCP for customer-specific account, order and return tasks. That is different from giving a merchant’s AI seller-operation access across multiple marketplaces.
